The Dowry opened in June 2018, after extensive renovation work on one of Commercial Street’s venerable buildings. The result is a light, airy café bar with a distinctly Scandinavian feel, and fantastic views over the harbour.
The menu covers all bases, they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, and everything in between. Brunch is available at the weekends too. There is something for everyone on the menu. From freshly made soups, waffles and sharing platters to seared Shetland scallops, Burra lobster, Lunna lamb and local rhubarb crème brûlée. The Dowry are big on provenance, and the knowledgable staff will always be ready to explain exactly what they’re serving you. They are passionate about using local produce and supporting local producers.
Their drinks menu is well worth exploring too. There are always interesting beers to be had, both draught and bottled, as well as an impressive range of spirits. Their wine list is one of the few in town to hit the mark, they don’t have an extensive cellar but it is carefully chosen. They will soon be opening an events space upstairs as well.
