Taste of Shetland Cooking Challenge now open! 5 July 2018
The highly successful Taste of Shetland Cooking Challenge is now open for entries. This year’s competition has a new sponsor. EnQuest Sullom Voe which sponsors the competition for the first time, on behalf of the Sullom Voe Terminal Owners.
The competition, run by Shetland Food & Drink, has become a high-profile event in Shetland’s food and drink calendar.
Marian Armitage, Chair of Shetland Food and Drink, says: "It’s great to see how the competition is gaining momentum. Last year’s live final, with Susan Msalila, Fiona Stirling and Karen Malone, was terrific. It was wonderful to see them being so creative with Shetland produce. We are delighted that some of our previous year’s finalists will return this year to cook some new dishes using Shetland produce, prior to this year’s competitors taking the stage.
“To enter, all you have to do is devise a 3-course meal which uses Shetland produce. This year, we are thinking about food miles so would like as many of the ingredients to come from either Shetland or Scotland, where possible. If you love cooking please do apply, it’s great fun.”
The prize is a wonderful foodie weekend in Edinburgh for the winner: return flights for two to Edinburgh courtesy of Loganair; an overnight stay in Porteous' Studio, an architect-designed holiday home in Edinburgh; and a six-course tasting menu with matching wines at Michelin-starred Restaurant Martin Wishart with champagne on arrival, coffee and handmade petits fours, as well as a visit to the kitchens.
Chef Martin Wishart comes from a long line of Shetland Wisharts. It’s the third year that Restaurant Martin Wishart have supported the competition. Martin says:
"It's fantastic to be part of this celebration of Shetland produce. Not only is it great to see how many more Shetland products are coming through onto the market now, but what a great job Taste of Shetland is doing in helping encourage folk to use more local produce. We are delighted to be supporting the Cooking Challenge again."
EnQuest Sullom Voe becomes the competition’s lead sponsor. The company will support the competition from beginning to end.
“EnQuest has now been Operator of the Sullom Voe terminal for more than six months and we are delighted to be here, in Shetland,” says Ian Lister, Area Operations Manager, EnQuest Sullom Voe.
“The Taste of Shetland Festival is a popular event which helps promote the fantastic local produce and the Taste of Shetland Cooking Challenge inspires folk from all over Shetland to get involved. The competition brings people of all ages together and we are delighted to be the competition’s lead sponsor this year.”
Marian Armitage, Chair of Shetland Food and Drink, adds: “We are delighted to have EnQuest Sullom Voe on board as a new partner for the competition. And we are thrilled to be working with Shetland College UHI again, who are helping us with the organisation of the event. We are looking forward to working with the staff and students to deliver a great event this year.”
