Peerie Bites 2018

Meet our winners...

Peerie Bites looks for budding cooks under 18 who want to find out more about Shetland produce. In the 2018 competition, our winners won the opportunity to work with NorthLink Ferries' chefs, developing their recipes for future menus and also had a chance to cook their dish on stage at this year's Taste of Shetland Festival!

All our entrants had to do was create a savoury dish whose ingredients included one or more items of Shetland produce. They also created a short video about the local ingredients they used in their dish. Whether about growing their own vegetables, working with Granny's hens or sheep, going fishing, visiting the local dairy - it was something that showed how interested they are in the story behind that Shetland produce. Our 2018 competition was sponsored by NorthLink Ferries and culminated in a live final at the 2018Taste of Shetland Festival, the most high-profile event in Shetland’s food and drink calendar. There were two categories to the competition: Junior, ie those of primary school age in August 2018; and Senior, those of secondary school age in August 2018.

2018 Peerie Bites Winner, Junior Section - Vaila Thompson

We are delighted to announce that Vaila Thompson was the winner from the junior section of the Peerie Bites competition. Vaila, aged 10, made an amazing Crabbie Tattie Pattie.

2018 Peerie Bites Winner, Senior Section - Eva Jamieson

Eva Jamieson was the winner from the Senior section of the Peerie Bites competition. Eva, aged 13, made a beautiful Smoked Mackerel Chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. Both dishes will feature on NorthLink Ferries' menu over the coming year.
