The Visitors Centre is run, almost entirely, by volunteers as one of the main activities of the Sandwick Social and Economic Development company (SSED). The organisation runs the Visitor Centre, as well as managing the historic pier and facilities at Sandsayre for the Mousa ferry. The group also has a formal partnership agreement with Shetland Amenity Trust for the Shetland UNESCO Global Geopark.
Hoswick Visitor Centre has recently been upgraded and a car park and outdoor interpretive area has been added. The Visitor Centre is really both a visitor attraction and a community hub, providing a café, interpretive displays, a space to showcase and sell local art and craft, visitor information, office rental and a community meeting space.
They work closely with a network of local arts and craft producers, independent tour operators and guides, local businesses and suppliers and the wider community, as well as supporting the GAETS project, promoting a network of local footpaths.
The café employs part time seasonal staff to support the team of volunteers. The menu includes as much local produce as possible, offering teas, coffees, lunch options and a wonderful selection of home bakes. A welcome stop for locals and tourists alike as they spend a day exploring the area.
