The family run a mixed farm with 60 breeding beef cattle and around 880 breeding ewes in total. The cattle are grass fed and the farm produces almost all the winter forage to support the herd, an essential part of sustainable livestock farming in the isles.
Their sheep stock includes a pure bred native Shetland flock and Shetland cross-breed stock. The native Shetland sheep is a hardy heritage breed with Protected Denomination of Origin status, also included in the Slow Food movement’s Ark of Taste directory. The farm’s pure bred Shetland flock are the only full-time residents of the isle of Mousa, also home to Shetland’s most complete Broch, which is over 2000 years old. The meat of this heather fed animal is truly unique. It is available to purchase direct, farm to fork, through the farm’s Mousa Lamb Box scheme. Contact the farm via email or telephone to find out more.
The rest of their sheep are also finished on the farm and sold through the marts. J&A Sinclair’s premium quality grass fed beef and lamb is sold through local and national supply chains.
