Local Provenance Scheme

October 14th 2019 | by Shetland Food and Drink in News

The rich, productive waters around Shetland provide a bountiful harvest of seafood. This includes locally farmed salmon and mussels, and wild caught fish and shellfish. To acknowledge the use of this quality seafood Shetland Food and Drink (SFAD) wish to introduce a Local Seafood Provenance Scheme to celebrate its use within the isles.

The idea is to have local producers, processors, restaurants and eateries promoting their use of local seafood by prominently displaying a sticker, especially designed, which celebrates the use of local seafood on their premises. This will ensure customers can be guaranteed they are purchasing local seafood.

In addition, eateries are asked to acknowledge when local seafood features on their menu. The logo can also be used on social media along side dishes produced using local seafood.

The Scheme is freely available to members of SFAD. To sign up all we expect local businesses to agree to is:

  • Display the Scheme logo in a prominent position in their premises
  • Use local seafood in all fish/shellfish produce sold by their business
  • Clearly identify the use of local seafood on menu/products
  • Support local businesses by complying with the payment terms set at the time of sourcing seafood

Anyone signing up will also have their business advertised on marketing materials showing where in Shetland local seafood can be purchased. This will be distributed to locals and tourists throughout Shetland free of charge. The leaflet is expected to be ready in early 2020 as more businesses adopt the scheme.
