Manju Malhi to Headline on Sunday

September 6th 2018 | by Shetland Food and Drink in News

Chef, TV presenter and author Manju Malhi joins Gary Maclean in the line-up of this year’s Festival.

We are delighted to announce that acclaimed chef Manju Malhi will appear at this year's  Taste of Shetland Festival  (5-7 October), demonstrating both in the Bowls Hall on Saturday and headlining on the Main Stage on Sunday morning, followed by a book signing.

Manju was born in England to Indian parents. She grew up in West London surrounded by Indian culture and traditions and spent several years of her childhood in India where she explored the vast and varied cuisines of the country, combining it with inspiration from her own life to create her own unique Brit-Indi style of food. Her first book was the acclaimed  Brit Spice . Her 40-part television series,  Cooking Isn't Rocket Science , for one of India's leading broadcasters NDTV, reached over 100 million viewers. She has also appeared regularly on ITV’s This Morning, Sky One, UKTV Food's Great Food Live and the BBC's Saturday Kitchen. Malhi’s other publications include  India with PassionClassic Indian RecipesEasy Indian Cookbook  and her current release -  Everyday Healthy Indian Cookery .

Manju also teaches. She is working on projects teaching children how to create simple dishes with healthy ingredients as well as sharing good eating habits with the elderly in various London boroughs. One is Open Age which serves the diverse communities of the borough of Kensington and Chelsea including the residents of Grenfell Tower.

Manju Malhi says: “I cannot wait to come to Shetland. I like to keep things simple and straightforward and love to be known as a crossover cook. So I’m really looking forward to combining Shetland’s wonderful produce with my own cooking inspiration.

“Home cooking is my passion - writing about it and helping people to learn about it. In this current climate when health issues, global waste and the respect of food is very much on everyone’s mind, home cooking is something that we can all do. The difference it makes, particularly to our wellbeing, cannot be underestimated and it’s a fantastic thing to teach people about. This will be my first trip to Shetland and I am really looking forward to meeting Shetland’s great home cooks and getting lots of tips and ideas from them.”

We have asked Manju to run a Taste of Shetland Curry Masterclass, our first foray into cookery workshops. The Curry Masterclass will be held on Thursday 4 October in a Shetland home kitchen and we will publish more information in due course.
