No boat? No problem! At the Peerie Shop Cafe

January 9th 2024 | by Joanne Williams in Blog

In the bustling town centre of Lerwick, amid the whirl of tourists and the grandeur of the Tall Ships event, an exciting culinary chapter unfolded in April 2023. That's when Amy and Chris took over the running of the Peerie Shop Cafe, embarking on a thrilling venture amidst a sea of opportunity.

Before their Shetland adventure, Amy and Chris journeyed across the country, honing their skills in various hotels and restaurants. However, it was a decade ago when they discovered their home in Shetland. Amy's passion for baking led to the birth of Fjanna—a small-scale bakery that tantalised local taste buds with delectable creations showcased at shops like Scoop, even featuring an honesty box at Amy's house for the community to relish her treats.

Amidst her baking pursuits, Amy also dedicated time to the Peerie Shop Cafe. When James Martin retired, Amy took charge, infusing the cafe with her culinary vision. Alongside Chris, they revamped the menu, championing local produce at its core.

Amy's culinary foresight extended beyond seasons. Her expertise in preserving local produce ensured a year-round supply, countering the scarcity of fresh fruits during Shetland's winter. Jams, syrups, vinegar, oils, and chutneys became her culinary artwork, enriching baked goods, soups, and pestos without relying on ingredients shipped from afar.

Her commitment to local producers echoed a broader dedication to sustainability: "Supporting our local producers ensures reliability even if when the boat doesn’t come in," Amy said.

Their saying in the cafe is "no boat, no problem"

Simplicity became their ally in minimizing food waste while maximizing flavours. Amidst the influx of tourists, Amy finds joy in introducing visitors to Shetland's culinary treasures.

Amy's culinary journey includes a stint at London's renowned Ritz, a testament to her diverse experiences, now woven into the fabric of Peerie Shop Cafe.

Under Amy and Chris's guidance, Peerie Shop Cafe transformed into a culinary haven, celebrating local flavours, sustainability, and paying homage to Shetland's vibrant community spirit. Their menu boasts an array of delightful sweet and savoury offerings, each dish a celebration of Shetland's rich culinary heritage.
